When most people think of Greyfall, they think of the cosmopolitan and friendly district of Midland. Situated on the leeward side of Citadel Hill, Midland stretches from the end of Enderin’s Wall west to Silent District and the Pillar Wall. It rises from sea level to climb the northern slope of Citadel Hill, where it ends just below the summit line. Midland encompasses the wards of High Bridge, Pillar Hill, Slope, and West Dock. As the home district of the Greycloaks, Midland has the fewest gangs and gang battles in the city. Despite that, the thieves’ guild does a brisk trade in the district thanks to the disproportionately high number of merchants, banks, and other commercial and financial concerns.
Citadel Volshyenek: The headquarters of the Greycloaks stands within Midland but belongs to no ward.
High Bridge: Despite its proximity to Mainshore, not every longshoreman and fisherman lives in High Bridge— roughly half live in the cheaper tenements of lower Pillar Hill. High Bridge does have its fair share of these hardworking folk, as well as the families of Greycloaks stationed nearby. Like the rest of the district, though, the ward also houses a wide crosssection of different kinds of people.
Pillar Hill: The most demographically diverse ward in Midland—and indeed, the entire city—Pillar Hill houses both fabulously wealthy merchants in its western corner, beneath the shadow of The Grey Keep, and hard-working laborers and longshoremen along the Pillar Wall east of Pillar Hill Boulevard. In addition to its wide distribution of wealth, the ward also claims variety in the races and ethnicities of its residents. Every human ethnic group represented in Greyfall can claim at least one member in Pillar Hill. In addition, members of all of the civilized races and call Pillar Hill home, as do a few creatures normally considered “monsters” by humans, though these residents generally stay to themselves.
The Slopes: As its name implies, this ward exists on the northern slope of Citadel Hill and overlooks Mainshore and the Jeggare River. Despite its proximity to roughand-tumble Mainshore, The Slopes hold numerous libraries, museums, and other places of culture. The Slopes also house
the third-highest concentration of educated people in the city, behind only University ward and the Acadamae. The Shebeferi engineers brought to the city to build the Great Tower settled in this ward and formed a small neighborhood with the few Silver Elves in the city. As a result, Greyfall has access to authentic and exotic south-Nezzeran foods and fashions.
Mainshore: This rugged ward contains no residences. It does house an extensive number of warehouses, fish processing facilities, and the remains of a block dedicated solely to meatpacking. The prevailing winds push the meaty stink of the ward northeast, providing Citadel
Volshyenek and much of High Bridge with unending waves of unpleasantness. Unwelcome but stubborn druids frequent the docks, proselytizing the evils of civilization and urging fishermen and crabbers to release their catches back into the river. These unwashed scofflaws frequently cause minor skirmishes when they attempt to enforce their ideals with more than just words.
This new building somehow manages to look run-down and decrepit. The plain sign on the door shows a fish with long green hair covering its eyes and face. This is Greyfall’s newest tavern, and in the space of only five months it has become a popular place for local fishers and sailors to relax.
The Hagfish serves only the cheapest grog and ale, often watered down and usually in grimy mugs. The prices can’t be beat, though, and, even with the diluted ale, this is the least costly place to get drunk in all of Greyfall- with the possible exception of one of the speakeasies in the slums. The tavern’s specialty is a thick black ale that tastes like dirt but isn’t quite as expensive as ingesting actual soil.
Much of the tavern’s success comes from its owners legend. The owner, Saramma Kemashk, an eccentric gold dwarf, floated into Greyfall harbor amidst much fanfare on a ruined boat burned down to the waterline. Blahg had a bag of holding filled with gold and pearls, and he used the money to build the tavern and open it within a month of his arrival.
Wizards, sages, and scholars flock to Greyfall’s largest bookstore. From mythic tales of lost explorers to the most recent reports from distant Nezzera, the Bookmaker’s massive selection covers a wide swath of topics and interests. All of the city’s universities, colleges, and schools (except the Acadamae) send their students to the Bookmaker, and many of the professors and masters from those establishments have written tomes for sale within.
Through an oft-violated gentlemen’s agreement, the Bookmaker and Gilded Orrery carefully avoid an excess in overlap of titles carried. Where the Gilded Orrery focuses its attention on the arcane, the Bookmaker takes a generalist approach to knowledge.
This long building controls most of the import trade that comes through Greyfall. All visiting merchant ships must sign in their cargo before they can offload their goods or sell their wares in the market, and because of its proximity to Greyfall’s deep-water docks, Whitecap Shipping has become a frequent stop for foreign traders. In addition to seafaring trade, Whitecap Shipping also controls a large amount of the land-based trade in town.
The largest structure in Mainshore, this sprawling wooden building towers over the neighboring warehouses. Here, carpenters build almost all of the needed fishing boats, merchant ships, and other vessels used by Greyfall’s residents and merchant families. The central wing contains administrative rooms, meeting rooms, supply rooms, and barracks for the local workers. The east wing is dedicated to the construction of fishing boats, while the west wing is dedicated to the construction of other types of ships. Two or three ships are in progress in each wing at any time. Once a ship is seaworthy, it is launched on one of several ramps that extend directly from the building itself.
The Saradin Shipyard is owned and overseen by Gashur ‘Skullbreaker’ Saradin, a gruff, tattooed Half-Orc who is nonetheless fair and honest in his trade. Gashur came to Greyfall an orphan, and was adopted by Pwenyrr Saradin, the elderly owner of the shipyard. When the old man died, many tried to wrest control of the shipyard from Gashur, who had just become an adult, but the half-orc was able to maintain his control of the business through clever networking and, at times, brute strength. Today, the locals deny such stories, having come to trust Gashur and his leadership.
This rough tavern frequently serves recently released prisoners of Citadel Volshyenek’s jails.
Because of that it also serves strong coffee to a high number of Greycloaks. Brawls between the two infrequently erupt but very quickly end. As the drunk (and usually unarmed) ex-prisoners can’t compete with the still-sober guards, these scuffles typically end with a return to jail. Despite its law-enforcement customers, Bailer’s Retreat is an excellent place to overhear rumors of illicit activities in Midland and North Shore.
Named for the Eternal Lord, Lord Volshyenek Ornelos, who paid for most of its construction, this impressive citadel houses the headquarters and main garrison of the Greycloaks. Additionally, Citadel Volshyenek houses a prison for local criminals, in comparison to the grand prisons of the Grey Keep, which house international criminals. This relatively normal citadel reputedly has an extensive system of Vaults beneath it that flood every spring with the rising waters of the Jeggare River.
